Are retirees good candidates?
Yes, tooth implants work equally well in older people as in younger patients. Bone density issues common in older people, usually do not negatively affect the final product, as implants can be placed successfully without bone grafting.
Dental implants or dentures?
Dentists typically now recommend implants instead of dentures in most patients. Tooth implants are now the standard of care for replacing missing teeth. Conventional dentures can cause damage to the jawbone and significantly compromise the patient’s chewing function, and therefore should be avoided.
The maximum age for dental implants?
No one is too old for dental implants. A reasonably healthy person can have dental implants and improve their quality of life. There is no reason to let anyone suffer from loose dentures and an inability to eat, speak, and impede their social activities.
How is the recovery?
Dental implant surgery, when performed by qualified surgeons, is a gentle procedure. Recovery is significantly faster and easier than teeth extraction. Some discomfort may last for several days which is effectively managed by over-the-counter pain medication. The implants may be either restored with a fixed denture or allowed to heal for several months before placing new teeth.
What are implant options?
The first option is the placement of two to four implants to attach a partial denture. This method provides great stability for the overdenture and significantly improves function and comfort. The second option is the placement of a larger denture on four to six implants, known as a fixed prosthesis, or a hybrid, and offers more comfort and appearance of natural teeth.
What are the benefits?
Implants allow patients to eat any food they want comfortably and get the necessary nutrition. They can effectively support the overlying teeth and prevent them from moving and accidentally dislodging. Additionally, they preserve the jawbone and from the bone loss that can occur with conventional dentures.
