What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are small titanium rods that are placed into your jawbone. Once healed, which usually takes 3-6 months, we place dental crowns on the implants. These implants plus the crowns form “new” teeth that are sturdy, attractive and will probably last your whole life long. Dental implants can secure dentures or a dental bridge, making them far more secure than traditional dentures.

Dental Implants

  • When deciding between dentures or implants, there are several factors to consider.
  • In considering dentures or implants, it is helpful to recognize that dental implants provide a far more secure option. If you have several teeth side by side, you can have dental implants placed on each side of the gap and have a dental bridge placed between the two implants.
  • If you have many or all of your teeth missing and are considering dentures or implants, you can have both! If you have several dental implants placed in certain areas of your smile, you can have dentures attached to the implants. This option is remarkably solid.
  • Sometimes when considering dentures or implants, the answer is some of the special dental implant procedures we offer at Cary Family Dental, such as mini implants, same day dentures or other options that can give you a better selection between dentures or implants.

Dental Bridge

Some of the other more permanent options when you are looking to restore your smile are a dental bridge that can be either permanent or removable. A permanent dental bridge is secured to the dental crowns that top the dental implants placed in your smile. A removable dental bridge clicks in and out like a retainer. The dental bridge is created to look, feel and function like your natural teeth.

You can also consider having full or partial dentures, which are like a dental bridge only with more teeth. They are secured to the dental crowns and look, feel and function naturally in your smile.
