Millions of people have replaced missing teeth with dental implants. Dental implants are state-of-the-art technology, and they’re available at Cary Family Dental.
A dental implant is a titanium post inserted into the jaw, where it fuses with the bone. Once that happens, you’re left with a solid base of support. One implant can support one artificial tooth, while several can support dentures.
Dental implants are an ideal restoration for most people. There is a problem, however, if the jaw bone is too thin at the implant location. Bone recession is, in fact, a fairly common issue after losing a tooth. It happens because the bone loses blood circulation where the tooth root used to be. If the recession is acute, there may not be enough bone to hold the implant.
Bone grafting is one solution, because it promotes new bone growth. It is usually effective, but a new discovery may provide a quicker solution.
Researchers at the Georgia Health Sciences University College of Dental Medicine have identified a protein that stimulates the production of new bone. The research team implanted bone protein in test subjects and discovered that “more new bone formed within four weeks than with conventional bone grafting.”
This procedure is not yet approved, and more testing is taking place. But it could lead to improved outcomes, down the road.
At Cary Family Dental, we offer single and multiple dental implants. Call us to schedule an appointment today!
