Bone Graft Surgery
Bone Grafting refers to the restoration or enhancement of the section of the jawbone that holds the teeth. Grafting is a surgical procedure that resolves the loss of the jawbone that may have been damaged due to lack of stimulation, tooth loss, oral trauma, infection, or disease. The procedure essentially rebuilds the bony structure beneath the gums. Sometimes it becomes a requirement before placing dental implants, bridges, or dentures.
Grafting also helps to stimulate new bone growth in the area where it is performed, restoring both the height and width of the jawbone. The material is provided from depositories called “bone banks.” The procedure allows the completion of dental implants and provides stability in their placement.
Healthy jawbone structures are crucial for new implant success, as well as for aesthetics. When the bone is either missing, too narrow, or has poor quality, teeth do not function. Consequently, when teeth are missing due to tooth decay or trauma, the mouth area of the face eventually loses structure and may require grafting.
Sinus Lift Surgery
Sinus lift surgery is a procedure that is used to fill areas of missing bone that usually function to hold teeth in place on your upper jaw. When there has been a long period of time without a tooth, the hollow area absorbs the rest of the space.
Sinus lift augments the bone mass in the top jaw, which increases the success in placing dental implants. It is also known as sinus augmentation, this surgery adds bone to your upper jaw in the area above your teeth. The new bone is filled between your jaw and the maxillary sinuses, and to make space for the bone, the sinus membrane has to be lifted slightly.
In other words, the sinus lift consists of pulling the maxillary sinuses upward. It is only performed when there is not enough bone in the upper jaw, which means that the sinuses are too close to the jaw. Dental implants must be placed once the bone is prepared. Occasionally there are patients with narrow bones that are also very strong, but in other cases, it can be the opposite case.
